How to Drain a Dishwasher

Faults with the kitchen dishwasher are hard to diagnose -- there isn't much to see when you open its front. The machine's filters and waste pipe may be blocked with residue, and the dishes will still be dirty, if the dishwasher is not draining properly after the wash cycle is completed. Check the water drainage pipe at the back of the dishwasher to make sure it isn't kinked or bent. Remove the dishes and the dishwasher's sliding racks before you start draining. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dishwasher. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and wear old clothes or coveralls. The residue in the dishwasher filters may be greasy.

    • 2

Reach inside the bottom of the dishwasher. Remove the filter guard, a silver grid covering the drainage filter, by lifting it out. If water covers the filter guard, you may have to find it by feel. Scrub the filter guard to remove residue and ensure the drainage holes are clear.

    • 3

Remove the filter. The filter unlocks with a short counterclockwise twist. Clean residue from the filter and rinse it under hot water. The water in the machine may now drain through the waste pipe.

    • 4

Place an empty bucket directly under the wastewater pipe, located under the kitchen sink. Pull the dishwasher drainage pipe off the wastewater pipe. The drainage pipe is usually ribbed and is located at the back of the dishwasher. It simply pulls off. This will cause the water to drain out of the machine and into the bucket.

    • 5

Replace the dishwasher drainage pipe onto the waste pipe under the sink. Ensure the drainage pipe is not kinked and has a clear route to the waste pipe. Empty the bucket. Reassmble the dishwasher filter, filter guard and racks.

    • 6

Turn the dishwasher on and use as normal.

Tips & Warnings
