How to Stimulate the Root Chakra

How to Stimulate the Root Chakra thumbnail
Mudra meditation is one of the oldest forms of Buddhist energy healing.

The root chakra rests between the anus and the genitals and rules your fight-or-flight responses, feelings of security, and your ability to feel grounded and connected to your present surroundings. When out of balance, physical and psychological ailments can manifest. Those with closed root chakras are susceptible to autoimmune diseases, leg pain and back pain, as well as depression, insecurity and excessive daydreaming. The root chakra must be open and functioning before any of your other seven chakras can be healed. Therefore, balancing the root chakra is an important step towards maintaining a healthy chakra system.

Instructions

  1. Grounding Exercise

    • 1

Ground yourself prior to meditation by standing up straight with feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent forward. Distribute your body weight evenly and mentally focus your weight downward.

    • 2

Focus on your connection to the earth. Visualize your energy exiting the soles of your feet and connecting with the earth's energy.

    • 3

Remain in position for several minutes, then feel the excess energy return to the earth as you break the connection. Perform brief physical activity, such as walking, house-cleaning or yoga; each of these will further strengthen your connection to the physical realm.

    Mudra Meditation

    • 4

Locate a quiet, peaceful area for performing meditative work. Sit with your back straight and legs crossed with the backs of your hands resting on your lap.

    • 5

Inhale and exhale deeply and clear your mind. Begin to mentally focus on the base of your spine and visualize a glowing orb of red light forming at that location. Close your eyes if necessary.

    • 6

Incorporate the root chakra mudra into your meditation--a Vedic hand gesture used to send healing energy to its associated chakra. Touch the tips of your thumbs to your index fingers and continue to focus on the glowing red orb.

    • 7

Chant a combination of Sanskrit letters that will resonate throughout your body to heal its associated chakra. Chant "lam" each time you inhale and exhale as your hands form the root chakra mudra. Stretch out the vowel sound in "lam" as you chant the word.

    • 8

Envision earth energy flowing from the ground and up the base of your spine to expand the glowing red orb. Visualize a glowing red light emanating from the orb and expanding to fill the bottom half of your body.

    • 9

See your chakra spinning in your mind's eye and acknowledge that it is now open. Visualize the earth's energy gradually slowing down and ending its flow into your body.

    • 10

End your meditation by voicing affirmations mentally or aloud. State that you are safe, secure, stable and grounded in the physical plane.
