How to Find My License Plate Number If My Car Was Stolen
A lost or stolen car is most easily identified by its license plate number. If you have not memorized your license plate number, you can find out the number in a variety of ways, provided you have state-issued identification. Generally, you can retrieve your license plate number through your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), your auto insurance provider or the dealership that sold you the vehicle.

1
Notify the police that your car has been stolen. Even if you've forgotten your license plate number, it's important to inform law enforcement of the situation as soon as possible. In some states, the DMV will not release any details about your vehicle until you have reported it stolen to law enforcement.

Go to your nearest DMV office. Although procedures vary by state, many DMVs will require that you appear in person and present some form of state-issued identification to get your license plate number.

Contact your auto dealership or insurance provider. Although they may be hesitant to release the information, they will generally have access to your license plate records and may be willing to share them with you.
