How Do I Clean My Throttle Body on My Dodge Dakota 2005 Model Truck?

The throttle body on your Dodge Dakota may seem like it is not a big deal, but a dirty throttle body can cause problems like stuttering or stiffness when accelerating. Cleaning your throttle body, which should be done approximately every 30,000 miles, could cost up to $150 if you take it to a local mechanic or Dodge dealership. Instead, you can do it yourself in your driveway for less than $20.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the air duct tube, air collector and throttle body from your Dakota using the screwdriver to loosen the clamps.

    • 2

Remove the throttle body sensors and IAC, and do not bump the plunger on the IAC.

    • 3

Spray the throttle body with throttle body cleaner, liberally coating it inside and out.

    • 4

Wipe the throttle body cleaner off the throttle body using the clean rag. Use the toothbrush to get in the close edges, like where the butterfly valve meets the throttle body. Continue until the throttle body is completely clean, adding more throttle body cleaner if needed.

    • 5

Replace and reattach the throttle body and other pieces, including the sensors and IAC.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never work under the hood of your Dakota while the engine in running or while the battery is connected.

  • If any portion of the throttle body looks damaged or bent, take your Dakota to a mechanic or Dodge dealership to have your throttle body replaced.
