Instructions

    • 1

Print out a stocking pattern. Use a copier to enlarge the size to 150 percent. Cut out the stocking pattern.

    • 2

Lay out two layers of felt. The size of the felt should be larger than the stocking pattern.

    • 3

Lay the stocking pattern on top of the two layers of felt. Use a disappearing-ink marker to neatly trace around the pattern.

    • 4

Pin the two layers of felt together to prevent the felt from shifting when you begin to cut the pattern. Cut the double layer of felt following along the tracing line. Cut leaving 5/8-inch seam allowance, which means that you should not cut directly on the line, but extend the cut outward from the tracing line by 5/8-inch.

    • 5

Cut the top of the stocking to even the stocking opening, if necessary.

    • 6

Thread the needle. Begin sewing on the tracing line beginning at the top of the stocking. Double stitch for about an inch along the tracing line when you first start sewing to provide a secure stitch to prevent the thread from unraveling.

    • 7

Sew along the tracing line until you have sewn along the entire tracing line. Double stitch when you get to the opposite side of the stocking at the top.

    • 8

Cut along the seam allowance with the pinking shears to create a decorative edge along the sides and bottom of the stocking, cutting 1/4-inch away from the seam.

    • 9

Make a 3 1/2-inch cuff at the top of the stocking by folding the top of the stocking downward.

    Make a Hanging Loop

    • 10

Lay the stocking flat with the boot of the stocking facing to the left. Cut an 8-inch by 3/4-inch strip of felt out of the remaining felt fabric. Use the color of your choice.

Cut an 8-inch by 3/4-inch strip of felt out of the remaining felt fabric. Use the color of your choice.

    • 12

Fold the strip in half. Place the strip in the top right of the stocking and sew it into place. Stitch in the seam of the stocking cuff to conceal the stitching.

    • 13

Cut out the various shapes from the template, or create your own. Use the shapes to cut out decorative felt shapes, placing them as you wish. Cut out stars, trees, animal shapes, etc. Apply the shapes using glue.
