How to Determine the Average Weight for a Person's Height

How to Determine the Average Weight for a Person's Height thumbnail
Knowing your height helps you to figure out how much you should weigh.

Many ideal body-weight charts and calculators exist online and in books that detail the proper weight for your height. Some doctors base the ideal body weight for a person of his BMI (Body Mass Index). Clinicians also use the HAMWI formula to calculate the ideal body weight of a person. It is important to remember that even if you are the ideal body weight for your height, it does not mean you are physically fit or healthy. A well-balanced diet, plenty of exercise and rest all play roles in living a full, healthy life.

Instructions

  1. HAMWI Formula

    • 1

Measure your height if you do not know it. Stand in bare feet against a wall. Lay a pencil along the top of your head. Use the pencil to mark your height on the wall surface.

    • 2

Turn around and measure the distance in feet and inches from the bottom of the floor to the pencil mark.

    • 3

Start out as a base weight of 106 lbs. if you are a male. Add 6 lbs. to that total for each inch you are over 5 feet tall. For instance, if you are 70 inches in height -- 6 feet tall -- your body weight based on the HAMWI formula should be 160 lbs.

    • 4

Begin with a base weight of 100 pounds if you are female. For every inch over 60 inches -- 5 feet tall -- add 5 lbs. For instance, if you are 65 inches tall, according to the HAMWI formula, your correct weight is 125 lbs.

    • 5

Add 10 percent to the total if you are a big-boned person or have a large frame. Subtract 10 percent from the total if you are a small-boned person or a petite frame..

    BMI Method

    • 6

Convert your height frp, inches to meters.

    • 7

Square your height; use the metric system for this as well.

    • 8

Multiply the sum by 18.5. This gives you the low range of your ideal weight in kilograms. Multiply the sum by 24.9 to find the top range of your ideal weight in kilograms.
