How to Hang an Extension Ladder

Save

Extension ladders can be extremely long, and finding a spot to store them can become an issue. For longer extension ladders that are generally kept in the garage, one of the best storage techniques is hanging it from the ceiling. This give you lots more room for all your other stuff.

Things You'll Need

  • Stud finder
  • Drill
  • Screws
  • Hooks
  • Drill bit
  • Stepladder
  • Dish soap
  • Vise grips
  • Search for an an area in the garage where there is not a lot of material underneath and where it will be easy to retrieve the ladder. The ladder should have plenty of room to hang.

  • Locate studs for the ladder to hang from. Drill a hole into the stud. The size of the bit depends on the size of the hanger. Ensure the bit is slightly smaller than the hanger going into the stud. Move down the garage and drill another hole in the same manner. The distance separating the two holes depends on the size of the extension ladder. Allow enough distance so the ladder can run past on either side.

  • Screw the hanger into the first hole. Just put the threaded hanger in the hole and tighten it firmly by hand. Repeat the process for the other hole.

  • Hang the extension ladder from the hanger. Make sure the ladder is evenly spread out between the two hangers and the ladder is hanging off each end equally.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding dish soap to the threaded hanger can help when screwing it into the predrilled hole. If the hanger will not go in, vise grips or pliers can be used to further tighten it.
  • Two hangers are all that is necessary to hang any size extension ladder.
  • Ladders must be hung from studs. Just drilling into the drywall and hanging it from there will cause the ladder to fall.
