How to Install Cable Snow Chains

Installing tire chains gets easier the more you do it.

Cable chains are not technically chains, but a series of interconnected cables that cross a tire in straight lines. There are no links to consider or untangle, but the installation process is somewhat similar to other types of tire chains. The chains can go on either the front or the back two tires; however, it's best to put them on the powered wheels. For example, if the vehicle features front-wheel drive, then the chains should go on the front wheels. If the vehicle is all-wheel drive, then pick either the front or back two.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cable chains from the package and lay them flat against the ground. If they are used, then you will want to inspect them for prior wear.

    • 2

Tuck the first cross-cable under the front of the tire, and then drape the cable chains on top of the tires. Make sure the open part of the cross member hooks face outwards. Inward facing hooks could potentially damage your vehicle's tires.

    • 3

Climb into the driver's seat, release your emergency brake, start the vehicle and ease the vehicle forward, but not by far. This will move a few sections of the cable chains beneath the tire.

    • 4

Turn off the vehicle and engage the emergency brake.

    • 5

Connect the outer sidewall cable by threading one end through the keyhole latch on the other end. Remove any slack from the cable, and secure the locking clips. Then, repeat the process for the inner sidewall cable. Ensure the cross cables go straight across the tire tread as you tighten the chains.

    • 6

Repeat this installation process on the remaining wheel.

    • 7

Drive the vehicle forwards and backwards for 15 feet. The cable chains will settle into place.

    • 8

Turn the vehicle off, engage the emergency break, and exit the vehicle.

    • 9

Inspect both chained tires and remove any remaining slack. You may have to slightly readjust so that the cross-cables again go straight across the tread.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always match your tire size to size of the tire chains. Chains that do not fit will not be effective and could damage your car or cause an accident.
