How to Make a Brother Scanner Work in Puppy Linux

Puppy Linux is a Live CD distribution that is famous for its size. The entire distribution loads itself into memory and only requires a total of 64MB to function. While scanner functionality has been built into the Puppy Linux Live CD since version 4.0, your CD may not have the necessary drivers to get Brother scanners working properly. Thankfully, Brother has Linux drivers and support available, so the set up process is much easier than with other manufacturers.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the Linux scanner drivers from the Brother website. You will have to select one of three drivers. Choose the one with your printer module listed underneath it and download the corresponding .deb package to the /root folder.

    • 2

Open a terminal and use the "cd" command to navigate to the /root folder. Type "debbi brscan" and press "Tab" to auto-complete the driver's package name. Press "Enter" to install the .deb package.

    • 3

Reboot Puppy Linux and run Xsane to begin interacting with your Brother scanner in Linux.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many devices are now automatically detected by Puppy Linux. Run Xsane and see if your scanner works without installing any extra drivers first.
