Stop Excessive Burping

Burping and passing gas are the body's natural way of getting rid of the air ingested during the digestion process. Not expressing the gas can cause it to build up in the intestines and make you feel bloated and uncomfortable to the point of being in pain. Excessive burping or passing gas can be embarrassing and socially awkward. However, this process can be controlled. It is not complicated and it will make you feel better.

Instructions

    • 1

Eliminate carbonated drinks from your diet as the excess gasses in the carbonation build up your stomach and result in burping.

    • 2

Stop chewing gum to avoid allowing unwanted air to be swallowed as you produce saliva.

    • 3

Relax when you're eating and take your time. If you eat too quickly, a lot of air will get trapped in your food as you swallow.

    • 4

Drink directly from a glass in long, slow sips. Don't use a straw when you drink because air is freely able to enter the bottom of straw causing you to swallow this air.

    • 5

Wait until you are finished chewing and swallowing your food and drink before you start talking. Breathe through your nose when you chew and swallow to keep excess air out.

    • 6

Limit the amount of heavy, acidic foods you eat like dairy, onions and beans. Avoid other foods that you know cause you to burp in excess to see if they are directly causing the problem.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your burping doesn't seem to be behaviorally linked try taking a fennel, ginger or burdock supplement.

  • Consult a doctor if you are in pain or cannot resolve the problem on your own.
