Earth, fire, wind and water are elements of feng-shui. Feng means wind and shui means water. When planning to decorate with these elements, you will want to find a balance between the yin and yang energies. Proper placement of objects creates a positive flow of energy throughout your home and blocks negative energy. Other feng-shui elements include metal and wood and should also be used in your decorating scheme. Many items represent the elements of earth, fire, wind and water, so it should be relatively easy to find colors and objects for every room in your home that are appealing to you.
Begin the decorating process with the element of wind. Wind represents the flow of energy. If there is a staircase directly in front of your front door, place a plant or table around it to redirect the flow of wind to other areas of the home. The same rule applies if there is a window or back door in the direct path of the front door. Open windows and use fans to keep wind circulating in your home.
Place earth elements in every room. Earth items represent stability and cover a variety of items such as things made of stone, ceramics, pottery and terra cotta, as well as paintings that depict deserts, mountains, flowers or forests. Pacing a jade statue between you and a computer or television is believed to bring luck and protect you from the fire element of electricity. Place living or silk plants in clay pots and add various shapes and colors of rocks or pebbles around the plant. Squares, rectangles and long flat surfaces are shapes associated with the earth.
Add fountains and fish aquariums in den, office, living and family rooms. Keep clean and fresh water in fountains and aquariums so the water energy does not become stale. Use metal water fountains inside the home to get the full effects of water. Round fish tanks also represent metal. Pictures of the oceans and lakes also represent water. A large picture of the ocean over the fireplace will help reduce the fire energy. Other decorative items that represent water are glass, mirrors, sheer fabrics, the color black and all shades of blue. It's best to go easy on water elements in the bedroom as its strong nature can interrupt sleep.
Accent rooms with the fire element. Fire has the most yang energy and can be overwhelming if too much is used. Items that represent fire are silk and synthetic fabrics, candles, sunrises, geometric abstracts, triangular shapes, animal patterns and the color red. Accents include red throw pillows or red table scarves. Use red or purple candles to further enhance the fire element. Another idea is to use red light bulbs.
