My LaserJet Won't Pick Up Paper From Tray 2

So you're having problems printing from the second tray of your HP LaserJet printer. The general rule with printers and copiers is that the more complicated they are, the more things will go wrong, and the second tray of any printer is no exception. If your printer is attempting to grab paper from the tray, then you can probably fix the problem yourself. If your printer isn't making a sound and simply doesn't work, however, then you're probably heading for the repair shop.

Things You'll Need

  • Can of compressed air
  • Determine whether your printer is attempting to grab paper from Tray 2. Send a print job to the tray; if you hear noise, then it probably is at least trying. If not, then the problem is likely a loose connection, and you should call a trained technician or take the printer in for repair.

  • Unplug and completely disconnect your printer from any connections and wires, and allow it to remain this way for several hours. This will serve two purposes. First, it allows the interior of the printer to cool down, which can affect its ability to grab paper. Second, it performs a hard reset on the entire printer, which can reset any jammed electronics. Surprisingly, many electronic problems are solved in this manner.

  • Remove all paper from the tray, and insert somewhere between 50 and 75 sheets of fresh paper. Then push the paper guides up as close as possible to your new paper stack. Sometimes, paper can get warped by humidity and cause a temperamental printer to stop functioning. Also, sometimes the guides come loose and aren't close enough for the printer to grab.

  • Remove all paper from the entire unit, and open all the doors of the printer. Spray down the entire inside with your compressed air, freeing the interior from dust and other debris. This will help to free up the interior and allow for smoother paper-grabbing from your tray.

  • Inspect the interior of the printer for any larger pieces of paper that could be jammed in that your air spray did not get. Remove these.
