How to Change the Startup Volume in Windows

Windows operating systems typically have a sound that plays upon the computer's startup. Users can reduce the sound by turning down their attached speakers, if they have them, or by changing Windows' settings. The startup sound can be disabled entirely, or users can choose to change the volume before shutting down their computer, so that the sound will be softer or louder at the next startup.

Disable the Startup Sound

  • Right-click on any open space on your computer's desktop. Select "Personalize" from the bottom of the menu.

  • Click "Sounds" at the bottom of the "Personalize" screen.

  • Uncheck the box next to "Play Windows Startup Sound," located just below the "Program Events" box.

  • Click "OK" to save your settings.

Adjust Overall Volume

  • Click the speaker icon on your desktop's bottom toolbar.

  • Slide the volume tab down to decrease the sounds for your computer, and up to increase the sound.

  • Click anywhere outside the volume box to save your new settings.
