How to Make Icons From PNG Files

Icon files can be quickly created from PNG images using a number of applications. Popular programs like GIMP and Photoshop have ways to save images as icon files, but if you do not have these programs, you may need to use another solution. With the rise in Web-based applications, there are now a number of websites that specialize in simply converting PNG images to icon files that work with every major operating system.

  • Open another window or tab in your Web browser and navigate to the ConvertIcon! Web site (see Resources).

  • Click "Get Started" to launch a file browser window. Select the PNG image you wish to have as an icon from your hard drive. Click "Export" once you have done so.

  • Tick the check boxes for the sizes you want to have your icon exported in, then click the "Save As" button and choose where to save your new icon file.

  • Open another window or tab in your Web browser and navigate to the ConvertIco Web site (see Resources).

  • Click "Choose File" and select the PNG file from your hard drive. Click "Convert" to upload the image and convert it to an icon file.

  • Right-click the download arrow and select "Save Target As" to open a file browser window. Select a name and location to save your icon file to.

  • Open another window or tab in your Web browser and navigate to the iConvert Web site (see Resources).

  • Click "Browse" and select the PNG file from your hard drive. Click "Convert" to upload the image and convert it to an icon file. Select a name and location to save your icon file to.

  • Select your operating system's icon file type and click the adjacent "Download" button to open a file browser window.
