How to Change a Headlight Bulb in a 1996 Subaru Legacy Sedan

Change your headlight immediately after the bulb has burnt out.

Replacing a burnt-out headlight bulb is an easy task that anyone with the right instructions can perform; the 1996 Subaru Legacy Sedan is no exception. Remember to use protective gloves while performing this task, since headlight bulbs are pressurized and any water residue from your hands, including sweat, could create a hot spot that could end up shattering the bulb. Changing the bulb on a 1996 Subaru Legacy Sedan will take a few minutes and will make your car safer to drive.

Things You'll Need

• Protective gloves
• Replacement headlight bulb (12V-60/551 wattage and HB2 (H4) bulb number)

Instructions

1. Turn the car off and remove the keys. Open the hood.

2. Pull the headlight out of the bulb's housing by accessing the backside of the bulb. Disconnect the electric connector, remove the rubber cover and---using your thumb and index finger---turn the socket counter clockwise and pull the headlight out of the housing.

3. Remove the retaining spring on the burnt-out bulb, and take it out of the socket. Place the new bulb firmly into the socket, and securely set the retaining spring.

4. Replace the rubber cover, reconnect the electric connector and place the socket back into the headlight housing, turning it clockwise to lock it into place.
