How to Look Up an Inmate

Looking up an inmate is useful for a variety of reasons. You might want to look up a family member you never knew due to imprisonment to satisfy your curiosity as about the family member's imprisonment and release date. Or, you might be creating a statistical report and would like to see how many inmates are in prison in a certain state for a certain crime. Whatever your reason, accessing information on inmates is simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your computer's web browser and go to The Inmate Locator (see Resources).

    • 2

Click the state in which the inmate is incarcerated.

    • 3

Click "Click Here" under the inmate locator for the state you selected.

    • 4

Type as much information about the inmate as possible in order to narrow down your search. Alternatively, you may search solely by facility, county or race. Once you have found the inmate you are looking for, click on the name to read information about that person and the sentence.

Tips & Warnings

  • This search is only applicable to the United States and its territories.

  • Alternatively, you may go to the Department of Corrections for the state the inmate resides in and search for him via the state's inmate search.

  • You may also search via the inmate search in the Federal Bureau of Prisons website (see Resources).
