My iPod Won't Go in DFU Mode

For many, the best features of modern iPods are the ones that Apple doesn't want you to own. To jailbreak an iPod or to repair a problem caused by previous tinkering, force the device into device firmware update (DFU) mode. Apple makes difficult to activate DFU mode. Putting an iPod into DFU is the most challenging step to jailbreak an iPod or iPhone. You may have to attempt the procedure several times before you are successful. After the device is in DFU mode, you'll be one step closer to enjoying the benefits of a jailbroken iPod.

Things You'll Need

  • iPod Touch or iPhone
  • Computer with iTunes
  • iPod USB cable
  • Open iTunes. Connect the iPod to the computer with the USB cable.

  • Turn computer's volume on, if it isn't already.

  • Hold down the device's "Home" button and "Power" button at the same time until the device turns off and the screen goes dark.

  • Let go of the "Power" button while still holding the "Home" button.

  • After about 10 seconds, you will hear a noise from your computer to indicate that it has detected a new device. Release the Home button so that it does not go into recovery mode.

  • Ensure that the iPod is in DFU mode and not recovery mode. The status should be made clear in iTunes, because it will ask you to restore the device's firmware. If it did not work, reset the iPod and try again.

Tips & Warnings

  • The trick to entering DFU mode is timing. It's likely that you will have to try this procedure over and over again before you get it right. Try to become used to the timing so you can be ready to release the "Home" button at the correct time.
  • Tinkering with an iPod or iPhone can be dangerous. You can cause the device to "brick" and stop working.
  • Even though putting the iPhone into DFU Mode doesn't void your warranty, jailbreaking it does. Be prepared to face the consequences if something goes wrong.
