1
Determine what type of bulb the tanning bed requires. Look at the connectors at the ends of your existing bulbs. A bulb with two pins at the end is the most common. Make sure the new bulbs you upgrade to have the same connectors.
-
2
Research the different brands of bulbs available for your tanning bed model. Different manufacturers offer different features, such as varying bulb life expectancies, higher or lower UVA/UVB levels, and different colored bulbs -- which doesn't affect tanning. Talk to local tanning bed owners and browse tanning supply websites for write-ups and reviews.

3
Decide what percentage of UVB rays you would like to upgrade to. They range from 5 to 8.5 percent. UVB is the active ingredient in your bulb, and is what causes your skin to tan. A higher percentage bulb will be stronger, thus requiring less tanning time.
-
4
Order your bulbs from the manufacturer or retailer. When upgrading bulbs for an entire tanning salon, buy a single set first to test them out.
-
5
Check the user manual for your beds if this is your first time changing bulbs so you will be familiar with the process. It should be as simple as popping out the old one and inserting the new one.
-
6
Inform your customers that you have a bed with upgraded bulbs available. Decrease the amount of tanning time with any new bulbs. Ask the clients to let you know if they noticed a change after their tanning session. This feedback will help you determine if you want to upgrade the rest of the beds' bulbs.
