Things You'll Need
- Desk set
- Business-card holder
- File holder
- Stacking trays
- Desk blotter
- Pencil holder
Clear the clutter from your desk. Keep on the desktop only the items that you use on a daily basis. Place the extra pencils, papers and files in a desk drawer.
Use a stack of three trays to organize your papers. Label the top tray "inbox." Place all papers that come into the office in the inbox. Label the middle tray "priority." Label the bottom tray "filing." Sort the inbox papers on a daily basis. Take immediate action on things that can be completed quickly. Projects that will take more than a few minutes should be moved into the priority or filing tray. Keep all paperwork off the desk and in the trays unless you are working on them.
Use a desktop hanging file organizer to store your most frequently used files. Place the file organizer within arm's reach of the work space. Keep only the files that you use daily on the desktop.
Stock the pencil holder with several pens, pencils, scissors and items that are tall and slender that you use daily. Select your favorite style of pen to place in the pencil holder.
Place your planner on the desk in a location that is easy to reach and see. Keep a pen next to your planner to write quick notes.
Place a desk blotter in the center of your desk. Keep the blotter area clear to work on projects.
Use a desk organizer to store sticky notes, calculator, a stapler and tape dispenser. Keep these within arm's reach but out of the way of your work area.
Place a business-card holder in a location where visitors will have easy access for picking up your card. Keep the business-card holder stocked with business cards.
