It is important to keep gutters clear of debris to prevent damage.

Damage to gutters can occur when debris gets stuck in the gutter and obstructs the water flow. Over time, the obstruction will collect moisture and rust out the gutter, causing it to leak. Repairing a gutter is an easy do-it-yourself project. Holes in gutters can be repaired with fiberglass mesh and roofing cement applied over the damaged area. Use a ladder that is safely secured to reach the gutter and wear leather gloves when repairing the gutter. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all debris from the damaged area. Clean the inside of the gutter with a wire brush and coarse sandpaper to smooth the area and remove any rust. Wipe away all dust with a rag.

    • 2

Cut a patch out of fiberglass mesh with scissors that is at least one inch wider and longer than the damaged area. Spread roofing cement around the hole with a putty knife then set the fiberglass mesh patch over the hole pressing firmly.

    • 3

Apply a layer of roofing cement over top of the fiberglass mesh patch with the putty knife. Smooth the roofing cement and feather the edges to prevent obstruction to the water flow. Let the roofing cement dry for the time recommended by the manufacturer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use caution when working on ladders.

  • Do not work on ladders when it is wet out or raining to prevent accidents.

  • Work on the gutter when it is dry to help the roofing cement form a better bond with gutter.
