How to Install Java Runtime Environment Fast & Free

Oracle's Java Runtime Environment is a program that runs software written in the Java programming language. This software can be a desktop application or an program embedded on a web page using the Java web browser plug-in. Oracle provides the Java Runtime Environment free of charge at their consumer Java website and it's fast to install. After installing the Java Runtime Envionment and restarting any running web browsers, your computer can run Java applications and Java applets on web pages.

Instructions

1. Open Oracle's Java download website in your web browser (see Resources).

2. Click the "Free Java Download" button on the web page.

3. Read the Java license agreement by clicking the "End-User License Agreement" link, then download Java by clicking "Agree and Start Free Download."

4. Save the Java installer to your computer by clicking "Save" in your web browser.

5. Start the Java installer by double-clicking the downloaded .exe file on your computer, for example, "jre-6u22-windows-i586-iftw-rv.exe."

6. Click "Yes" if the User Account Control prompt appears.

7. Click "Install" in the welcome window. Java installs automatically, with no user input required.

8. Click "Close" after Java is finished installing.

9. Restart any running web browsers by closing all their windows and re-opening them. Web browser won't use the Java browser plug-in until they're restarted.
