Instructions

    • 1

Wash and condition your hair. Use hair products made specifically for your hair type. Dry your hair with a large towel to remove water.

    • 2

Add a setting lotion or mousse to your damp strands. These products will add texture to your hair, and allow the small perm rods to adhere to the hair smoothly.

    • 3

Separate hair into four sections using a wide-toothed comb. Use a butterfly hair clip to keep the sections divided.

    • 4

Roll a two- to three-inch section of hair on small perm rod rollers. Starting at your forehead, roll the hair back onto the scalp, keeping the roller taught as you roll the hair downward. Hair Finder's website recommends you "use end papers before rolling each section of hair to ensure a clean wrap."

    • 5

Sit under a hooded dryer for 30 to 90 minutes or until the rollers are dry to the touch. Once the hair is completely dry, remove the rollers carefully.

    • 6

Comb hair with a wide-toothed comb. Separate the hair into four sections to prepare for teasing. Place the rat tail comb near the scalp, and tease each section to give the hair increased texture.

    • 7

Pat your hair into an afro shape. Once you tease each section with the rat tail comb, flip your hair upside down and spay with medium-hold hairspray.

    • 8

Stand upright and comb the teased hair with the wide-toothed comb to create the afro. Pat the hair with your hands into a round afro shape. Spray with hairspray to set.

Tips & Warnings

  • For very thin or straight hair, this temporary afro hairstyle will only last until the next shampoo.

  • Perm rod rollers come in various sizes. When using a roller to create texture in long hair, the smaller the hair roller, the tighter the curl.
