Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the waist of the person who will wear the tutu. Cut a piece of 1/2-inch wide elastic band about 1 inch longer than the measurement. For instance, if a child has a 15-inch waist, cut a piece of elastic about 16 inches long.

    • 2

Bend the elastic into a circle. Butt the ends of the elastic together; don't overlap them. Stitch the ends together with a needle and thread, passing the needle up through one end and down through the other. Pull and stretch the band to make sure it's secure.

    • 3

Fold the tulle into neat squares, and roll the squares up into semi-tight cylinders. Use sharp scissors to cut them into 3-inch sections. Unroll each section into a very long loop. Snip the loops so you have two 14- or 15-inch strips from each loop.

    • 4

Fold each tulle strip in half. Pinch the fold on a strip to make a loop. Place the loop inside the elastic waistband so it sticks up from the waistband. Fold the loop down over the elastic and slip the ends of the strip through the loop. Tug the ends tight to complete a lark's head knot.

    • 5

Continue attaching tulle strips to the waistband with lark's head knots, alternating the colors in a set pattern to create a very full, fluffy tutu skirt.

    • 6

Disassemble the faux flowers, removing all plastic parts. Place the flowers on the tulle skirt and glue them in place at the centers with Liquid Stitch. Random patterns work best. Add rhinestones to the centers of the flowers and embellish the skirt with small, faux butterflies.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose pastels like lavender, spring green, baby blue and soft aqua, which work very well for fairy costumes.
