How to Use Up Small Cotton Jersey Material Scraps
Cotton jersey, most often used for T-shirts, is a soft and elastic fabric that lends itself well to patchwork quilting. Small cotton jersey material scraps can be cut to a uniform size and sewn together for a quilt of any dimension. Cotton jersey has an interlocking weave that eliminates excessive fraying, which enhances the quilt's durability in the washing machine and dryer. A cotton jersey baby quilt will prove to be a practical and cozy addition to an infant layette.

Instructions

1
Cut the cotton jersey material scraps to a uniform square size, for example 5" square, using the rotary cutter, ruler and self-healing cutting mat.
-
2
Sew two squares together with a 1/4" seam, creating a rectangle. Repeat. Sew the two rectangles together to create a four-patch square.
-
-
3
Sew together as many four-patch squares together as desired. Sew two four-patch squares together and then two more.
-
4
Sew the two rectangles together to create a 16-patch square. Continue connecting the patchwork squares together in the same manner to assemble the completed quilt top.
-
5
Cut the quilt batting and muslin backing to the same measurement as the completed quilt top.
-
6
Layer the backing, batting and quilt top on a flat surface, such as a large table. Place a safety pin in the center of each square to connect the three layers. Top stitch with small stitches through the seam lines of each square.
-
7
Cut a long 2" strip of quilt binding from the muslin with the rotary cutter. Sew the binding to the edges of the quilt, with a 1/4" seam. Fold the binding 1/2" twice and hand stitch it to the back of the completed cotton jersey quilt.
