How to Calibrate an Onkyo Stereo

How to Calibrate an Onkyo Stereo thumbnail
Even if a speaker is right by you, it doesn't sound louder than a far speaker.

Onkyo Stereos feature a calibration setting that allows you to adjust the volume level and set that level for each speaker. This calibration ensures that all of the speakers sound at the same volume when heard from the default listening position. Even if a speaker is close to you, calibrating will stop it sounding louder than a far away speaker. Calibration can be accomplished by following some steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Setup" button. The first item should appear on the display, which is "Speaker Setup." If it doesn't, use the arrow buttons to scroll through to find it.

    • 2

Press the jog dial on the Onkyo stereo, or the button marked "Enter" on the remote control. Turn the jog dial, or use the arrow buttons to display "Level Cal?" on the display. Press the jog dial or press "Enter."

    • 3

Listen for a test sound from the left front speaker. Don't move from your location, but press the jog dial, or press the down arrow button on the remote and the sound will emanate from another speaker. Adjust the volume of that speaker with the jog dial or cursor buttons so that it matches the volume of the left front speaker.

    • 4

Repeat this calibration until all the speakers emanate sound at the same volume. Each time you press the jog dial or the down arrow, a different speaker will sound. Simply adjust the volume between each press of the jog dial or down arrow. The order of speakers calibrated on Onkyo stereos is front left, then center, then front right, then surround right, then surround left, and then the final press of the jog dial or down arrow selects the subwoofer.
