How to Upload Access Databases to the Web

Professionals wishing to share Microsoft Access databases with their colleagues have it easy with the tools the Internet provides. If you are uploading your database to share via email or a document-sharing service, such as Google Documents, uploading your file can be easily done via the on-screen instructions within the website itself. However, if you are looking to upload database files to share via your own website, you will need to get your files uploaded to your Web host. Doing this will require at least a cursory familiarity with File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch your FTP client. Locate the input fields for "Host," "Username," "Password" and "Port." These fields will probably be at the top of the FTP client window. Type in the corresponding information for your website. This information was most likely included in the original account information email sent to you by your Web-hosting provider. Once all information has been entered, click "Connect."

    • 2

Browse through your local directory folders within the FTP client to find the Access database file. Within the remote site files, expand the online directory folders to reveal the destination in which you wish to host the file.

    • 3

Click and drag the database file to the online directory folders. Depending on the file size and your Internet speed, this may take a minute or two to copy. Once the copying process has completed, your database file is now uploaded to your hosting server.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the database location and file name are spelled correctly in all relevant hyperlinks that are added to the website. Misspellings will result in broken links.
