Children of all ages like dressing up as Spider-Man.

With the release of the 2002 Spider-Man movie, based on the Marvel comic books, children of all ages wanted to dress like their favorite hero. The superhero suit is a form-fitting spandex bodysuit with hood. It is mostly bright red and royal blue, with silver webbing designs and a black spider image. The head is completely covered in the hood with black and silver accents over the eyes and more of the webbing design. Making your own Spider-Man suit is simple, and you can find many of the things you'll need in your own closet.

Instructions

  1. DIY

    • 1

Print out images of Spider-Man to use a guide. The pictures will help you imagine how to proceed, and you can practice your web and spider drawing skills.

    • 2

Dig around in your closets for the needed materials. Ideally, spandex is the fabric of choice, but anything form-fitting will work. The best homemade costumes cost very little and are still authentic. If you cannot find some of the items, try a big box store or dance supply shop.

    • 3

Draw a black spider image on the center and front of the red hooded shirt. Color it in. Draw another spider image on the back center, but you can leave this one just outlined. Some costumes have the same image back and front, and in the movie, the back spider is red while the front one is black.

    • 4

Draw webbing over hood, chest, and arms of the red hooded top. Use your printed pictures as guide.

    • 5

Spray boots or galoshes red outside, or in a well-ventilated area. Allow them to dry completely, and then add the silver webbing design.

    • 6

Put on the costume so far. You have a completed red top with hood to hide your hair, blue tights or pants and the finished boots.

    • 7

Practice drawing a Spider-Man mask on paper first. The elongated and angled black around the eyes are the key to the face painting.

    • 8

Copy the black around the eyes onto the face of the suited Spider-Man. Make sure it is thick.

    • 9

Color the entire face with red costume makeup, except the eyes.

    • 10

Using black eyeliner, draw a web design over the entire face, completing the Spider-Man costume.

Tips & Warnings

  • Print out lots of pictures to guide in the creation of your Spider-Man suit. You can choose either classic comic book Spider-Man or movie Spider-Man.

  • Don't let a few mistakes bring you down. Most people won't notice if something isn't exactly right. Use spray paint outdoors or in a properly ventilated room.
