How to Make FF7 Work on XP

When Windows XP was released, it caused some compatibility issues with older programs such as the Square Enix classic, Final Fantasy 7 (FF7). In this role-playing game you follow the adventures of Cloud, a spiky-haired rebel, and his friends, first subverting the authorities of Midgard city and then departing on a quest to save the world. Of course, you can't set off on this adventure if you can't run the program on your computer.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Install the original game using the "FF7inst.exe" application on the Final Fantasy VII install disc. Follow the on-screen prompts to select a disk drive to install to, choose whether or not to make a shortcut, and then install the game.

    • 2

Uncheck the box for graphical drivers and click "Next." Do not install any graphics drivers when prompted. The drivers included on the disc are not good, and have been replaced by a patch.

    • 3

Download and install the patch from the CNet download site. Install the patch by unzipping it to your FF7 archive and replacing any existing files. This is an official patch from Eidos which should fix the graphical issues. If you continue to see problems with the game after installing the patch, follow the steps below.

    • 4

Download the Qhimm.net OpenGL mod and install it using the same method as the patch: unzip the mod files to the FF7 directory. This is a fan-made file which tells the Final Fantasy game program how to use the existing OpenGL drivers on your computer.

    • 5

Run FF7config.exe, and highlight the "Graphics" tab. Under "Renderer," highlight "Custom" and click OK. The program will prompt you to test the renderer settings. When complete, the game will use the custom OpenGL modification to render graphics and won't crash on Windows XP.

Tips & Warnings

  • While you are making modifications, you can also change some visual settings by editing the ff7_opengl.cfg files, such as a custom resolution or operating in windowed mode.

  • Downloading and installing the custom OpenGL patch is not supported by Eidos or Square-Enix. It is a fan-made patch and could possibly damage the core game files. If you have any issues while running the patch, you may have to contact its creator, as there is no tech support for the modified game.
