How do I Run an X Pipe Exhaust?
V-8 engines fire unevenly. When dual exhaust systems are installed on V-8 engines, if the exhaust gases are ported from the vehicle from each manifold, or side of the V-8 engine, the gases exit the vehicle in a pulsating manner, rather than in an even flow. Installation of an X pipe on a dual exhaust system allows the exhaust gas pressure buildup from one pipe to be released into the other pipe. The equalization of pressure enables the gases to exit the exhaust system more quickly, increasing horsepower. X pipe systems may be installed on other vehicles than those with V-8s.

1
Install a dual exhaust system, if you do not already have one. X-pipe systems are designed to work only if the exhaust from each manifold is separated into two pipes.
-
2
Select an X-pipe based on the diameter of the existing exhaust pipe size. X-pipes are primarily available in standard steel and stainless steel. Stainless steel X-pipes may be more expensive, but they also are significantly more corrosion-resistant. Depending on how close your vehicle's dual exhaust system's are currently located, and whether or not you can bend the existing piping, you may also need to acquire front pipes and back pipes pre-bent for installation and connection to the X-pipe.

3
Determine the location of the X pipe. Under the chassis of the vehicle, you will need to find a location to install the X-pipe, which is free of vehicle framing, braces and torsion bars. Measure the angles and distances from each back and front pipe from the point of the intended bend to the point of the connection to the X-pipe.
-
4
Remove the exhaust pipes from the vehicle and mark them for identification with left, right, front and back for easy identification during cutting and welding. Cut the pipes according to the measures and allow several extra inches to ensure a solid fit when attempting to fit the X-pipe. Bend according to the measurements. Lay out the pipes and X pipe on the ground to check final measurements. Make any final cuts and adjustments.
-
5
Weld the X pipe to the back and front pipes and reinstall the exhaust pipes in the vehicle.

Tips & Warnings
Custom exhaust kits are available for many vehicles, which not only include the X pipe but also all pipes pre-cut, bent and ready for install.
Muffler shops can install X pipe systems, either from parts at the shops or supplied by you to reduce costs.
If your vehicles already has a dual exhaust with a single dual-in muffler, the dual-in muffler acts as an X pipe, smoothing the exhaust gas flow, and an X-pipe will provide very little, if any, additional performance benefit.
