How to Replace a Tail Light Bulb in a 2005 Jetta
Even well built vehicles require repairs over time, but knowing how to perform small repairs can save you money. A broken tail light is a relatively easy repair, especially on recent vehicles such as the 2005 Jetta. If your Jetta's tail light is out, save time and money by replacing it yourself.

Turn off the ignition and make sure the parking brake is engaged for safety reasons.

Open the trunk. On the side panel door in the trunk, there are two circular locking devices that resemble dials. Turn the locks to unfasten the panel door and access the tail light assembly.

Locate the light tray, which contains two tabs on both sides that hold it in place. Apply light pressure on the tabs to release the tray. Release the bulb you want to replace by twisting it counterclockwise. Set the bulb aside.

Insert the new bulb into the tray by turning it clockwise. Slide the light tray back and let the tabs fasten it into place. Reposition the side panel door and fasten it into place by turning the locking devices.

Sit in the driver's seat and press your foot on the the brake to test the new tail light. You may need the help of a friend to determine if the light is working properly.
