How to Change the Drive Oil in an Evinrude
One of the tasks associated with having an outboard is changing the gear oil. But this isn't much of a chore, since it gives you the chance to work with your boat, even if the boat isn't in the water and won't be going in the water any time soon. Not only do you need to change the drive oil in your Evinrude as part of its regular maintenance, you also need to change the oil in preparation for the motor's winter lay-up when you store your boat during the off-season. It doesn't even take a bunch of tools.
Instructions

1
Disconnect the cables from your boat's battery.
-
2
Use a screwdriver to remove the vent plug just above the gear case. The plug is actually a screw with a fiber washer around it. Set a drain pan beneath the gear case to catch the oil.
-
-
3
Unscrew the oil drain plug from the bottom of the gear case. Remove the screw and the fiber washer without dropping the screw or the washer in the oil pan. Drain all the oil from the gear case, keeping an eye on it as it drains. If the oil takes on a milky color, your gear case has picked up water, and either you or the dealer will need to investigate before the motor is used again.
-
4
Insert the tip of the tube of gear lube into the oil drain hole. Note that the lube goes in thicker than it comes out. Squeeze the gear lube up into the gear case. It may take more than one tube of gear lube, depending on the model of the motor. Different models have different lower ends, and the gear case capacities aren't uniform across all models. The gear case is full when you see lube coming out of the vent hole.
-
5
Leave the tip of the tube of gear lube in the drain/fill hole. Screw the vent plug and washer back in place. Remove the tube of lube and replace the drain plug and washer.

Tips & Warnings
Dispose of the used gear oil properly.
Failure to disconnect the battery cables may result in a propeller strike injury should someone start the motor without knowing you are working on the motor. Propeller strike injuries can maim or kill.
