The computer on a 1992 BMW 325i senses when an oil change is needed and will trigger a warning light in the instrument cluster that will tell you to check the oil. Even after you have checked or changed the oil, the light will stay on. You have to reset the light manually, but this is a straightforward task that requires only basic tools and very little time.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the hood and prop it open. Locate the diagnostic port, which is on the passenger side of the vehicle near the engine. It is a round connector with a black plastic cover.

    • 2

Remove the cover to reveal the connector pins on the port. Note that each pin has a number beside it.

    • 3

Locate pin numbers 7 and 19.

    • 4

Bend a paper clip into a U-shape to allow for one end of the clip to be inserted into the number 7 position and the other into the number 19 position. Bend each end of the paper clip about a 1/4 inch to form a small loop on each end.

    • 5

Turn the ignition key to the number 2 position, but do not start the car.

    • 6

Insert one end of the clip into the connection port at pin number 7 and the other into pin number 19. Hold the bent clip in place for four to five seconds. Remove the paper clip. This will reset the light. Check the instrument panel to verify.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not insert the paper clip for more than 10 seconds, as this may reset the inspection interval settings.
