How to Get Text Editors for Pokemon ROM Games
ROM Hacking is the process of altering ROM for various purposes. ROMs are the dumped memory of usually classic video games from old systems. With various programs and a bit of coding you can take a game and change everything about it, making it into a brand-new game. Pokemon is no exception to this as there are many hacks that make the games harder or easier, or even add new pokemon. As there isn't just one tool needed for the job, potential ROM hackers must download a slew of programs to get started.

Brush up on the basics of coding. While many ROM hacking programs take care of some coding for you, you will need an understanding for the parts that it will not cover.

Read up on various ROM hacking tips and tutorials. Join a ROM hacking community for first-hand advice. There are links available under Resources.

Download a ROM emulator corresponding to the system used for the particular Pokemon game you wish to hack. For instance, if you want to hack a Pokemon game that was for the Gameboy Advance you will need to download Visual Boy Advance. Please see the first link in Resources.

Download an IPS patching file such as Lunar Ips. This is so you can patch the ROM to test it out. A link to this is available in the Resources section.

Download a hex editor. This is a program used for editing the text of "known structures" such as item lists. See the second link under Resources.

Download "Advance Text" and "Script ED." These programs allow for the manipulation of all text in the game. See the second link under Resources.

Load the Pokemon ROM.

Select an area in the game by clicking on it.
