How to Recover XP With Chkdsk

The "Chkdsk" utility is a Windows DOS command line application that checks your hard drive for bad sectors. The bad sectors are deactivated, so the Windows XP operating system does not try to write to the disk or store any of your important data to that section of the hard drive. This recovers the Windows XP operating system when you receive errors of bad sectors on your computer's hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button. Select "Run" to open a text box. Type "cmd" into the text box and press "Enter" to open the Windows command line.

    • 2

Type "chkdsk drive: /f" and press "Enter." Replace "drive" with the drive letter for your hard disk that contains the Windows XP files.

    • 3

Press "Y" to confirm that you want to use Chkdsk on your next reboot. Chkdsk needs to scan the hard drive in the system directories while booting.

    • 4

Reboot the computer. The next time your computer boots, the Chkdsk utility scans and fixes any errors on your computer.
