How to Cook Popcorn in a Paper Bag

Your microwave provides a quick solution for making fresh popcorn without the mess or cleanup of stovetop or popcorn maker popping. Paper oven bags, made especially for use in the microwave, turn any regular popcorn kernels into microwave popcorn. Homemade microwave popcorn tastes just as good and pops just as quickly as the storebought variety, without the extra additives.

Things You'll Need

  • Microwave oven bag
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Butter or olive oil (optional)
  • Seasonings (optional)
Step 1

Place ¼ cup of popcorn kernels in a microwave-safe oven bag. A 10-by-6-inch size bag works well for this amount of popcorn.

Step 2

Fold the top of the bag over three times, leaving enough room in the bag for the popped popcorn. Do not flatten the bag after folding.

Step 3

Set the bag upright in the microwave. Microwave on high for 2 to 3 minutes, or until there is a 2- to 3-second delay between pops.

Step 4

Remove the bag from the microwave and allow the popcorn to cool for 5 minutes before opening the bag. Open the bag carefully so escaping steam doesn't burn your hands or face.

Step 5

Pour up to 1 tablespoon of melted butter or olive oil in the bag and shake it to coat the popcorn, if desired. Season with salt, Parmesan or your preferred seasoning mix to taste.
