Repairing erroneous WMV files using free software.

The WMV (Windows Media Video) file extension is a video file that was developed from Microsoft's Advanced Systems Format (ASF). WMV files are essentially ASF files that have been encoded with the Windows Media Video codec. WMV files are used to compress large video files and still maintain a high video quality. Occasionally, WMV files can be damaged or corrupted, but you have some options if this happens. Steeper, All Video Fixer and ASF-AVI-RM-WMV Repair are three free programs that can repair WMV files.

Download the Steeper ZIP file and unzip it to your hard drive (see "Resources" below). Steeper is a freeware program that allows users to repair ASF and WMV files. Please be aware that Steeper requires Windows Media Services version 9.0 or above to function properly. The Windows Media Services package is available on Microsoft's website.
