There are many steps an individual must take to become a licensed driver. These steps include (in no particular order) filling out applicable forms, taking a vision test, taking the road test and passing a written test. The written test is given on a computer. It is a mix of multiple choice questions on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques.

Prepare for the written test by studying the driver's manual. The test questions are taken from this manual. The manual is available at your local Department of Motor Vehicle office for free or can be downloaded from its website.

Take the practice test online to see what areas you need to improve on. The test is available on your state's DMV website.

Go to your local DMV office to take the driver's license reading test once you're ready. Fill out any necessary paperwork, bring your birth certificate, Social Security card and a picture ID to show proof of identity. Pay the required fee to take the reading test.

Begin taking your written test once the DMV clerk calls your name and tells you which machine to go to. Enter your identifying information and start the test. Read the first question and select the correct answer from a list of multiple choice answers. Go to the next question and repeat the same process until you have completed all of your questions.

Review your reading score. Once the test is complete you will immediately see your test results. Many states require a score of 80 percent or better to pass the reading test.
