How to Use Scan Disk on XP

The Windows system tool known as "Scan Disk" was removed from the operating system's software for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. A new tool was created, "Check Disk," which performs the same task of scanning your hard drive for errors. Check Disk can also be used to automatically fix any internal errors present in your hard disk drive. It is recommended that you use Check Disk regularly as part of your computer maintenance routine in to keep your computer in optimal condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Open "My Computer" and right-click the hard drive icon you want to scan for errors.

    • 2

Select "Properties" from the pull-down menu, and then click "Tools." Find the section below "Error-checking" and select "Check Now."

    • 3

Read the options displayed on the "Check disk options" window and choose the appropriate option. You can choose to only scan the drive, scan the drive and automatically correct any errors, or scan the drive and attempt to recover bad sectors. Click "Start" when you are ready to scan the drive.
