How to Install Snowthrower Tire Chains
If you are fortunate enough to have a snow blower when those heavy snow squalls hit, it won't do you any good at all if the blower can't get through the snow. You need to equip the snowblower with tire chains anytime you get more than a dusting of snow, just as you would a car. It's best to buy the chains early and practice putting them on the blower before the snow flies. That way, you'll be prepared for a major storm. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Lay the chains out on the floor so the flat surface of the chain is toward the tire. The side that is curled, with hard edges, should face the ground, so as not to puncture the tires. Make certain the chains are straight and that the individual chains are not crossed.
-
2
Notice the two different hooks on either side of the chains. The fixed hook will go on the side of the tire facing the snowblower. The long clip hook is on the outside of the tire.

3
Tuck the first rung of the chains under the tires of the snowblower, then drive the blower into position until the tire is 2/3 of the way over the chains. Turn the engine off.
-
4
Hook the inside of the chain first, using the fixed hook. Bring the chain ends together and fasten the two ends together with the hook.
-
5
Bring the outside of the chain together. Pass the long shank of the clip through the first link at the other end. Fold it back on itself and clip in place, holding the two ends together.
-
6
Adjust for slack by moving the hooks, if necessary. The chains can have some slack in them, but you want them to stay on the tires. If the chains are extremely loose, check the tire pressure of the snowblower. If the chains are still too loose, place a bungee cord across the tire to hold the chains in place.
-
7
Affix the other tire chain in the same manner. Drive the machine for 1/4 mile or so, then adjust the chains again.
