Mixed hair, or hair on someone of a mixed racial background, can be very difficult to style because of the varying textures. Mixed hair also struggles to lock in moisture. Since straightening can sometimes strip the hair of moisture anyway, it's important to take the necessary precautions to protect your hair before straightening. If you know which products to use and how to execute the straightening process, you'll end up with a smooth, finished product
Things You'll Need
- Moisturizing shampoo
- Deep-conditioning treatment
- Blow-dryer with comb attachment
- Hair clip
- Flat iron
- Smoothing cream
Wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo in the shower, focusing on the scalp and not the strands of the hair. Rinse out all the shampoo.
Apply a thick, deep-conditioning product all over the strands of your hair, from root to tip. Allow the conditioner to penetrate the strands for five minutes before rinsing completely from the hair.
Squeeze the hair dry with a towel, making sure not to rub, which causes frizz.
Brush the hair thoroughly to remove all tangles. Apply a quarter-size dollop of smoothing cream through all the hair, adjusting the amount of cream used for longer or shorter hair. Use your fingers to comb the product and evenly distribute it through your hair.
Blow-dry your hair with a comb attachment, pulling the comb through 1-inch sections of hair at a time until all the hair is dry. Brush again to remove tangles.
Clip the top layer of your hair to the top of your head with a hair clip. Use a flat iron to straighten the bottom layer, 1-inch sections at a time. Remove the hair clip and straighten the top layer using the same technique, running the flat iron through 1-inch sections.
Apply a dime-size amount of smoothing cream to your hand and rub your palms together. Smooth your hands over the style to tame any excess frizz and add extra moisture.
