The 2006 Volkswagen Jetta should have functioning brake lights at all times.

Regular maintenance of your vehicle's head and tail lights can save you from a fix-it ticket from the local police. Replacing a brake bulb in any vehicle doesn't require much time or effort, and a functional brake bulb helps protect against a rear-end collision. The 2006 Volkswagen Jetta uses 5008 (R10W) European bulbs for the brake lights.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the vehicle on a flat surface and secure the parking brake. Allow time for the tail lights to cool down, as they can be hot.

    • 2

Open the hatch of the vehicle. On whichever side of the vehicle you are replacing the lights, remove the two circular clamps to gain access to the tail lights. To remove the clamps, twist and then pull them. The tray holding the tail light bulbs will now be accessible.

    • 3

Squeeze the tabs on the outside of the tray in order to release it from the tail light. Gently pull the tray from out of the tail light, being careful not to touch any of the bulbs.

    • 4

Rotate the bulb counterclockwise and pull it from the tray to remove it. Install the new bulb by pushing it into the tray and rotating it clockwise to lock it into place.

    • 5

Place the tray back into the taillight until the tab clicks, securing the tray into place. Reattach the two circular clamps and close the hatch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never touch the replacement bulb's glass portion with your bare hands. The oils from your fingers can cause damage to the bulb.
