How to Tighten the Emergency Brakes in a 2003 Subaru WRX
The 2003 Subaru WRX is a high performance all-wheel drive vehicle modeled after Subaru's famous rally cars. For all its advanced features, the 2003 Subaru WRX has many of the same devices as a typical car, including an emergency brake. Over time, the emergency brake on a 2003 Subaru WRX becomes looser as a result of the brake cable stretching. The emergency brake is an integral safety feature; knowing how to tighten it when it becomes too loose to function properly will help keep your car in place.

1
Park your 2003 Subaru WRX on a flat surface and turn the car off. If you have manual transmission, leave the car in gear to help hold the car in place.
-
2
Pull the emergency hand brake up and release it several times to release any extra tension in the brake line. Leave the hand brake in the down position.
-
-
3
Remove the plastic trim panel that surrounds the emergency handbrake. Use a flathead screwdriver to help pry the panel up.
-
4
Locate the two nuts that on the adjustment bolt at the base of the handbrake. The top nut is gold and the bottom nut is silver.
-
5
Use your crescent wrench to loosen the gold locking nut, then use the wrench to tighten the silver adjustment nut. Periodically check the tension of the hand brake. Tighten the silver nut until the hand brake becomes tight about 3/4 of the way up, or about 7 clicks.
-
6
Tighten the gold luck nut and replace the plastic trim panel.

Tips & Warnings
If you frequently park on a slope, check your emergency brake cable often. Frequent heavy use can stretch the brake cable much faster.
Do not overtighten your emergency brake. An emergency brake cable that is too tight can stretch and snap, causing the system to fail and your car to roll away.
