How to Transfer Cable DVR to a PC

Cable digital video recorders, or DVRs, record movies and TV shows onto a built-in hard drive. If you would like to keep the shows on your cable DVR's hard drive, or use the show footage in a computer application, such as a video-editor, you must first transfer the cable DVR footage to your PC. Transferring the footage from a cable DVR to a PC is a fairly simple process that can be accomplished using Windows native video-editor, Movie Maker.

Download and install Windows Movie Maker if the program didn't come preinstalled on your PC. Downloads of Windows Movie Maker can be found on the Microsoft website and on the software site Soft82 (see Resources).

    • 2

Use a digital video capture device to connect your cable DVR to your PC. To connect a digital video capture device to your DVR, plug the red and white audio cords and yellow video cord at one end of the device into the "Audio Out" ports and "Video Out" port on your DVR, matching the cords to the port of the same color. To connect the device to your PC, plug the USB cable at the other end of the device into a USB port on your PC.

Launch Windows Movie Maker on your PC. To launch Movie Maker, click "Start," click "All Programs," and then find and click "Windows Movie Maker," usually found near the top of the program list.

Open the capturing wizard in Movie Maker by going to "File" and "Import from digital video camera." Enter a name for the video you want to capture from the cable DVR when prompted, click the "Browse" button to choose a folder to save the DVR footage into and then click "Start Capture."

Play the footage you want to capture on your cable DVR. When the footage is finished playing, click "Stop Capture" in Movie Maker to stop the capturing process. Click the "Finish" button and the video saves to the folder you selected.
