How to Extend a WiFi Antenna
A Wi-Fi antenna gathers wireless signals from the airwaves and transmits them to the device it is attached to. Increase the performance of the Wi-Fi antenna by extending the range of its reception. The procedure involves disassembling the Wi-Fi antenna, but does not require an extensive knowledge of electronics. A few supplies and some common household tools will be needed--with adult supervision suggested if a child is involved.
Things You'll Need
- 12 gauge insulated copper wire, 10 inches long
- Wooden screw
- Wire strippers
- Ruler
- Soldering iron
- Solder
- Wire cutters
- Plastic drinking straw
- Cellophane tape

1
Unscrew the base from the Wi-Fi antenna's rod using your fingers. Pull the rod off the antenna wire connected to the base--taking care not to bend the wire. The base should now have an exposed antenna wire. Dispose of the rod properly.

2
Measure 2-1/2 inches in from one end of the insulated copper wire. Make a bend at the 2-1/2 inch mark using your fingers. Place the bend against the head of the wooden screw. Wrap the free end of the copper wire around the length of the screw until you reach the end. Push the end of the copper wire against the side of the wooden screw.

3
Pull the wooden screw out of the copper wire.
-
4
Strip 1/2-inch of insulation off the bent end of the copper wire with the wire strippers.
-
5
Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off the end of the wire attached to the base with the wire strippers.
-
6
Heat up the soldering iron for five minutes. Solder the exposed end of the wire that is attached to the base to the exposed end of the copper wire. Let the solder cool for two minutes. Unplug the soldering iron.
-
7
Place the end of the plastic drinking straw over the copper wire. Push the plastic drinking straw down onto the base. Secure the end of the plastic drinking straw to the sides of the base with strips of cellophane tape.
