How to Apply Auto Window Tint
Applying window tint inside a car reduces excessive sunlight and heat during hot summer months. Some people also apply window tint to add privacy while driving. Window tint also adds more character and style to a car. Some people pay a lot of money for special window tinting service, but you can easily install tint film yourself and save money. Most window film does not require special skills or tools for installation. If installed correctly, window tint lasts for the life of a vehicle.

- Craft paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Spray bottle

- Wallpaper-smoothing tool

Inquire about any local and state government laws concerning vehicle window tint. Some states do not allow car window tinting at all, while other states may only allow tinting for backseat windows.

Measure the windows you plan to tint, using a a tape measure. Measure the height and width of each window and make note of the measurements.

Visit your local automotive store and purchase a window tinting kit. Choose your tint by selecting the desired shade and the size that matches the window measurements. Every tinting product notes the size and the shade or darkness rating on the side of the package.

Apply window tint in a clean garage, if possible, or an area without wind and airborne debris. Remove dirt and dust from the inside of the vehicle as well.

Create a precise template by tracing the exact shape of the interior windows onto craft paper. Use a pencil to lightly trace the outline. Trace a template for each window being tinted.

Place the window template over a layer of window tint film and carefully cut around the edges of the template using scissors. Using a craft paper template produces the perfect window fit for the tint film.

Fill a small spray bottle with warm water and lightly spray the inside of the first window you're tinting.

Carefully peel the tint film off of the backing and lightly spray the film with the warm water. Spraying water on the tint film allows for easier window placement and adjustment.

Carefully place the tint film onto the window. Adjust the edges where necessary to match the exact shape and fit of the window.

Remove air bubbles from the film, using a plastic wallpaper-smoothing tool. Completely remove all of the air bubbles by pushing the wallpaper-smoothing tool from the center of the tint film to the outside edges.

Tips & Warnings
Use a table to make the cutting of the tint film easier.
Do not open the car doors for at least 24 hours after applying tint film.
Do not leave air bubbles underneath the tint film.
