How to Reset a House Alarm

Owning a house alarm can be an effective way to decrease the probability of an intruder entering your home because alarm systems increase the probability an intruder will be caught, according to Chris E. McGoey, a professional investigator and security consultant. The house alarm can also be a nuisance if it is accidentally triggered. In either case, once the sound from the alarm is no longer needed, you can reset it so it returns to its standby state. Resetting an alarm takes only a moment to complete and requires no special expertise.

  • Type your pre-assigned passcode into the alarm system's display panel. Typing your passcode allows the alarm system to recognize you as an authorized user who can make changes.

  • Press the "Alarm Off" button. Other variations of this button may say "Alarm 1 Off" or "1 Off."

  • Release the button you pressed in Step 2. The house alarm will reset itself to its standby state.
