The Brother Intellifax 1270 both sends and receives fax transmissions over telephone lines. In order to use the device, you will need to have working telephone service to plug the device into, as well as a telephone cord. The device does use a print cartridge, much like a printer, to print received faxes as well as fax confirmation pages. Troubleshoot any and all problems you encounter with the machine so you can pinpoint the cause of the problem, and either fix it yourself or have a professional service the device.

Machine Does Not Answer Calls

Press the “Mode” button on the device’s control panel. Use the arrow keys to change the fax setting if it does not match your phone system setup.

Pick up device’s handset from the cradle and listen for a dial tone. If you hear no dial tone, return the handset to the cradle and press the “Hook” button on the control panel to see whether you hear a dial tone over the device’s speaker.

Make sure the phone line is securely plugged into the device and the telephone jack. If the connection is secure, unplug the phone cord from the device and plug it into a single-line telephone to check for a dial tone.

Call your phone company if you hear no dial tone on the single-line telephone. If you do hear a dial tone, call your fax line and listen for any ringing. If you hear no ringing, contact the telephone company.

Cannot Dial to Send Fax

Lift the device’s handset off the cradle to check for a dial tone. You can also press the “Hook” button to listen for a dial tone over the device’s speaker.

Adjust the device’s tone or pulse setting by pressing the “Function” button, then the “6” key and the “1” key. Press the arrow keys to select either pulse or tone, depending on your phone service, then press the “Set” key and then the “Stop” key.

Inspect the phone cord connection at both ends to make sure it is securely in place. Make sure the handset’s cord is securely plugged in at both ends, and that it is not plugged into the device’s jack labeled “EXT.”

Make sure the device’s power cord has been inserted as far as it will go into the back of the device.

Pick up the handset and dial the number to send a fax to. Once you hear the fax machine at the other end, press the “Start” button on the device to start the transmission.
