How to Reset the Oil Light on a Chevy Cobalt

The Chevrolet Cobalt uses a computer system called the Engine Oil Life System that indicates when to change the engine oil and filter. The computer monitors things like engine revolutions and the temperature of the engine. The oil life system must be reset every time the oil is changed in order for it to properly monitor the engine conditions. The "change oil soon" light will stay on constantly when the system calculates that oil life has been diminished. Resetting the oil life system turns off the indicator light.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition switch to "ON/RUN" without starting the engine.

    • 2

Press the reset and information buttons on the control panel at the same time to enter the personalization menu.

    • 3

Press the information button to scroll through the menu options until "Oil-Life Reset" is displayed.

    • 4

Press and hold the reset button until the display shows "Acknowledged." This indicates the oil life system has been reset. The oil light turns off.
