How to Add Fluid to a Pontiac Transmission

How to Add Fluid to a Pontiac Transmission thumbnail
Maintaining your transmission will save you the trouble of costly repairs.

Pontiac vehicles call for automatic transmission fluid to be added while the vehicle is at operating temperature. Other vehicles require the driver to add fluid when the engine is cool. Maintaining an adequate fluid level is key so that your car can change gears and keep your transmission in good shape. Since the fluid is responsible for lubricating the transmission, fluid levels should be checked once a week or as needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the key so that your car's ignition starts the vehicle. You don't have to wait for the engine to get hot, but you should let it run for 2 to 3 minutes.

    • 2

Open the car's hood and prop it up. Locate the transmission dipstick just to the side of the engine. Pull out the dipstick and wipe off any fluid. Replace the dipstick and let it set for about 5 seconds.

    • 3

Take out the dipstick and read the levels. Fluid should fall in the middle of the top and bottom lines. If the level is beneath the bottom line, you should add an approved transmission fluid.

Place the funnel over the hole where you pulled the dipstick. Pour a small amount of transmission fluid into the funnel, allowing it to flow into the transmission. Repeat the procedure for checking fluid levels by re-inserting the dipstick. Fill until the proper level is reached.
