How to Make Motion Posters

Save

A motion poster is made using a specific set of guidelines for making optical-illusion art. The principal of the guidelines uses lines, shapes, colors and voids to create the perception that the object or objects are moving. The brain perceives the placement of the drawing in such a way that it looks as if it is pulsing, spinning or moving. Create a simple pulsing optical illusion or motion poster using wavy lines and an ultra-fine black permanent marker.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Newspaper
  • Black ultra-fine marker
  • Lay a piece of newspaper on the working surface. Place the paper on the newspaper.

  • Begin in the upper left-hand corner of the paper and draw a lazy curved/waved line to the lower right-hand corner of the paper. Vary the size of the curves/waves in the line. Four to five different-size curves/waves easily create motion when the drawing is complete.

  • Follow the curves/waves of the line and draw a line 1/16-inch from the line across the length of the page. Repeat the process until the entire page is covered with curved lines. Do not touch or join one line to another. The combination of the black lines and the space between the lines creates the movement.

  • Look at the drawing when complete for the movement that occurs at the bends and curves.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fill in every other space with the black ultra-fine marker to create a different type of movement within the drawing.
